Mills, Bridges, Churches, Lighthouses and more After years or talking about it, we finally got our first book published.  "Discovering Scenes of Georgia", a photobook of images from rural Georgia.  It includes photos of our own backyard (Peachtree City and Tyrone Georgia), but mills, churches and covered bridges from all over Georgia.  I can only take a small portion of the credit.  My wife (who also has several photos in the book), did all the research and heavy lifting in getting it printed, published, Library of Congress number etc.

For all her hard work, we are currently a number 1 new release in two categories on Amazon!  And will hopefully have our book signing this Spring.  2018 is starting off pretty well.

Elopements | A New Wedding Trend https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2017/8/elopements-a-new-wedding-trend South Atlanta wedding photographer, now offering elopement wedding packagesElopement WeddingSouth Atlanta wedding photographer, now offering elopement wedding packages Lately a new trend in weddings has begun emerge.  Many couples are foregoing large expensive affairs, for smaller more intimate and less expensive weddings.  Elopements are becoming more and more popular.  Some of these weddings are not technically elopements in the traditional sense, they are weddings with between 2-25 guests, and only take an hour or two.  These elopements are step up from a courthouse weddings, there are several beautiful venues in the South Atlanta area.  Most of the planning and decorating details are taken care of for them - eliminating the need to negotiate with a small army of vendors.

As a wedding photographer, of course we enjoy large, grand, and elegant weddings.  They are beautiful to photograph, and pay well.  Elopements are quite different.  These couples are looking to save money for their honeymoon, first home etc.  I understand completely, in fact I applaud the fiscal responsibility that elopements offer.  Even though they are small events, they are still very significant to bride and groom.  It is still their wedding day, and a memory they will want to share and cherish.  We have created special wedding packages for elopements.  These are simple, basic photography packages that record these small expressions of love and commitment.  Our elopement packages start at $399 and are perfect for elopement couples.

Peachtree City, Tyrone, Sharpsburg, Newnan, Fayettville, Fayette County and Coweta County.  Gobi Photography covers weddings throughout Georgia, and the South Atlanta area.

Anatomy of a Photo Shoot https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2017/6/anatomy-of-a-photo-shoot BTSBTS It's been several weeks since I posted, we have had several projects we've been working lately, and am looking to sharing them on our blog.

Last month we ventured out of our usual stomping grounds of Peachtree City and Tyrone and headed out to St. Louis for a couple of days of photography.  As soon as we checked-in to our hotel room, we got started on a High School Senior photo shoot.  The shoot was at an old, no longer used, train station.

The first photo on the right shows how shoot looks behind the scenes.  Nothing too fancy, a couple of flashes for fill light.  As I mentioned earlier, we used an old train station.  It is directly behind the Union Station Hotel in St. Louis  There are usually a couple of train cars (I think that's what you call them?), some train tracks that are safe for your subjects to use.  That part is nice, I could get photos on the train tracks, which are always popular, and not put my models at any risk.  The aluminum siding or the rail-car (that's what you call them!) makes for a great reflector too.

High School Senior photo taken behind the Union Station in St. Louis.Senior Photo ShootHigh School Senior photo taken behind the Union Station in St. Louis. The second photo is straight out of camera, no cropping, not even exposure or contrast adjustments.  It is a great photo, and I'm sure the subject would be very pleased.  She looks great, the composition is perfect and there's nice converging lines and shallow depth of field to add interest. .  I used an 85mm lens on a full frame camera which makes for very flattering portraits.  The greater than 45 degree bend at the elbow makes her look more dynamic and confident.

Sure, I could just stop there and call it a day.  If I was a baker I could pull a High School Senior photo taken behind the Union Station in St. Louis.Gobi Photography High School Senior ShootHigh School Senior photo taken behind the Union Station in St. Louis. cake out of the oven and say it's done.  Sure it would be delicious (cuz I'm and awesome baker!), but taking a few more minutes and adding some icing makes it more pleasing to the eye and makes it even tastier.  For my editing work, I almost exclusively  use Adobe Lightroom.  If I need to make some significant changes, like removing people or lamp posts, then I'll use Photoshop.  The edit in the third photo only took about 5 minutes (I have my own system that helps me get it done very well and really quick).

I strive to keep my portrait edits looking natural, and not like an obvious "photoshop" job.  I also wanted to give her a warmer, softer look.  I think it worked well.

Courtney and CJ Engagement Photoshoot https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2017/5/courtney-cj-engagement-senoia-peachtree-city I am photographing this young couple's wedding in just a couple of weeks.  Courtney and CJ, I had an amazing time doing their engagement shoot in Senoia GA, just a few miles from Peachtree City and Tyrone Georgia.  I originally met Courtney and her Mom at a Bridal Show in Columbus, Courtney is from the Columbus area, but her mom is from Peachtree City, so I'm a local photographer for her.  I did meet CJ until the engagement shoot.

I did a comic book themed engagement session, that caught Courtney and her Mom's attention.  Courtney was all for doing a themed shoot, which was great by me!  She went with a vintage theme, and even coordinated for a vintage automobile.  I suggested Senoia, because it's a very quaint little Georgia town with tons of charm.  It also has an abandoned railroad track, which let us get some pictures on the tracks without any risk of trains.

Switching some of the shoot locations around worked well into a romantic story, and made for an great slideshow.  Here's a peek at Courtney and CJs wonderful love story.

5 Reasons You Should Learn Macro Photography | Photographer in Peachtree City https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2017/4/5-reasons-you-should-learn-macro-photography-photographer-in-peachtree-city 5 reasons to learn Macro Photography

macro6macro6 So what is Macro Photography exactly?  Macro photography has to do with the size that your subject is projected onto your camera’s sensor. If you have a one-inch subject, its projection at “life-size” would be one inch on the camera’s sensor. An object which fills one inch of the sensor will fill most of the resulting photo, since the sensors in typical DSLRs are no more than 1.5 inches long.

This allows us photographers to get close, and record a huge amount of detail of smaller subjects.

It’s not that expensive.

macro7macro7 When talking photography, expensive is relative.  But macro photography requires less equipment that most other types of photography.  Macro photography is an amazing specialty.  You capture images that we don’t or can’t ordinarily see.  If you already have a DSLR, you can begin taking Macro photos with just a set of extension tubes (under $40 on Amazon).  To get the best images though, you will want a macro lens.  I high quality macro lens starts at about $500, not cheap, but definitely not an expensive lens.  On the bright side, you will only need one macro lens.

Unique photos every time!

Sure, you can photography Oxbow Bend, or the Grand Canyon, but you will not get a truly original photo.  Chances are that as you get ready to set down macro4macro4 your tripod, you will see tripod marks from hundreds of photographers before.  The miniature world is constantly changing, providing you an endless supply of subjects and tiny landscapes...all completely original and never to be repeated.

Save on travel costs

Amazing macro subjects are literally everywhere! Bugs, flowers, plants, buttons, gears, almost anything.  Master macro photography, and you will never need to far to create amazing and interesting photo.

Lots to experiment with.

Using a macro lens, you can create all types of original looking photos using water, oil, bubbles dust and many other things.  Your imagination is the only limit.

macro3macro3 Forget about the golden hour.

No need to worry about waiting for the perfect light.  Working with these tiny subjects you can easily provide open shade with something as small as a sheet of paper, or simply find your subject in a tiny patch of shade.

Explore this amazing area of photography, enroll in a Macro Photography workshop and you will open up a whole new world of subject matter and photography!

Bridal Show Winner - Free Engagement Shoot | Peachtree City Photographer https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2017/4/bridal-show-winner---free-engagement-shoot-peachtree-city-wedding-photographer The 2017 Bridal season has begun, we kicked it off with three bridal shows earlier this year, in Columbus, Peachtree City and Douglasville.  We normally giveaway either a DVD slideshow or engagement session at each show.  The winner of our Flat Creek Bridal show was Christina Bauer, and her fiancee Nicholas Rodgers.  Our engagement session is valued at $250, and she was very excited to be chosen.  Our prize winners get the exact same experience as any full price customer.  Our first step is to send out an initial questionnaire to find out a little more about our couples, so we can make it fun, shoot that shows them off as the unique and wonderful couple they are.  In the questionnaire, they told us they would like to shoot at a barn.

Christina and Nicholas Engagement ShootChristina and Nicholas Engagement Shoot 1Newnan Georgia, Venue at Murphy Lane We recently did a photobooth a barn in Newnan.  Although they have not opened yet as a venue, it was not only an amazing barn, it was a beautiful venue several great locations for our shoot.  I immediately reached out the the owner, Kara and she was pleased to let us use her location.  **Note to any brides looking for a venue this fall or later lookup "The Venue at Murphy Lane".

So during the shoot, while I was taking some photos of the bride-to-be, I caught the groom-to-be taking some photos too...of his car.  It was a beautiful car, a Nissan 300zx and he obviously was very proud of it, so I promised to hook him up with a special shot, just for him.

It was mid-afternoon on very sunny day, a beautiful day, but it was not good for the what I had in mind.  I had packed a flash unit with 360 watt-seconds of power.  Time to put that puppy to the test!  I was able to underexpose the sky and use the flash to make the couple and the car really pop.  The result straight out of camera was exactly what I envisioned.

Nicholas proposed to his beautiful fiancee in front of their church, the same church where they plan to have the wedding later this year.  Normally our engagement sessions are 1 to 1 1/2 hours, and we had finished up at Murphy Lane, but since their church was on our way home and not too far from our shoot location, we asked if they wouldn't mind taking some photos there too.  They loved the idea and were up for it.

By this time the sun was setting and putting out a beautiful golden light over everything.  I positioned myself between the couple and the setting sun.  I intentionally wanted to get a little lens flare in the photo.   Christina and Nicholas-95Christina and Nicholas- Engagement Shoot 95Wedding, Engagement Photo

At Gobi Photography we host a meetup called "Photographers Playground".  We meet at our studio in Tyrone, GA the first Tuesday of every month, and discuss topics of interest to full-time, part-time, or someday photographers.  Instead of simply sharing photos and discussing them, we cover business, marketing, social media, and different genres of professional photography.  Now, I have always found photographing High School Seniors one of the most interesting areas of photography.  You don't have the urgency and physical demands of wedding photography, but you still get to be creative, try new things and have fun. You can view some of on our Senior Photography page.  We invited Ana Lombardi of Ana Lombardi Photography to speak to us.  Ana is one of the most gobi-11High School Senior PhotographyAna Lombardi teaches High School Senior photography at the Gobi Photography / The Photographer's playground successful and talented High School Senior photographers in the South Atlanta area. Ana came armed with information.  We had a ton of questions, and she delivered answers and advice from her years of experience.  Everyone came away learning something new regardless of their experience level.  She began with advice and lessons on running a photography business.

Of course we love to to incorporate a hands-on component to our meetups whenever we can, so we brought two seniors to model for us.  Ana walked us through her approach to modeling, lighting and tips and techniques to a successful photo shoot.  We setup a couple of studio lights, a reflector and learned how to light and pose from head to toe.  She was very gracious, and stayed to answer all our questions. Our Photographer's Playground group had so many questions, I we didn't close up shop till after 10:00pm

Next month our meetup covers websites for photographers, I got a feeling it will be a fire hydrant of information.

If you want more information on future meetups, join us at Photographer's Playground

It's the Digital Age, So Why Wedding Albums? https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2017/1/its-the-digital-age-so-why-wedding-albums Peachtree City Wedding PhotographBonnie and Clyde WeddingI'm sure Bonnie and Clyde's descendants would have enjoyed a wedding album I adamantly believe every bride should have a wedding album.  I guess its a by-product of social media and the digital age, but I always hear "I just want digitals".  I totally understand why a bride would want digital photos.  When my daughter gets married, of course I'd recommend she get digitals.  So why do I still feel so strongly that a wedding album is so important?  Digital images by their nature are vapor...a bunch of ones and zeroes.

I have several photo albums, some are over 20 years old and are simply 4x6 prints stuck on album pages, others are professionally printed.  I can sit here now and tell you exactly where they are.  Do you know where all your digital files are?  How long would it take you to find photos of your family vacation from 3 years ago?

Imagine when your children of grand-children are getting married, and imagine walking over to your bookcase and pulling your album off the shelf, placing it on the kitchen table and sharing it with your loved ones.  How many computers and cell phones will you replace in 20 years.  Will Instagram or Facebook even exist...who knows how we or our kids will store and retrieve photos then.

An album is, and will always be a elegant, social and tactile way of sharing and reliving one of the most special days of your life.  Ask for your digital photographs from your wedding, but make sure you get a quality album, it will be one of your first family heirlooms and you will cherish it for years.

First Bridal Show of the Season | Tyrone | Peachtree City Wedding Photographer https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2017/1/first-bridal-show-of-the-season-tyrone-peachtree-city-wedding-photographer peachtree city wedding photographerWeddings of Georgia Bridal Show 2017Our first bridal show of the season. Our lighter setup Today was our first bridal show of the season.  We tested out our new lighter, faster setup.  I must say it worked out really well!  Much time saved, which is always good.   This was Weddings of Georgia at the Columbus Trade Center.  It was fun crowd, some really amazing and interesting brides.

It was a little bit of trek from the Tyrone / Peachtree City area, but it's usually a good show for us.  I am feeling pretty good about the 2017 wedding season.  Already lined up several weddings to photograph and am excited to start.

Of course we also do portraits, head shots, seniors (and those are super fun), but weddings are always so special.  Knowing how much time and money each bride and her family have put into a single day. Witnessing the outpouring of love from family and friends, and we get to photograph that for the couples, is really and honor.

We still have a few more bridal shows to do this winter/spring, so if you are looking for a wedding photographer, give us a call or email soon, as dates are filling up.  If you live near Peachtree City, Tyrone of Fayette County, please feel free to stop by our studio.  We'll put on some coffee and talk wedding :)

I love wedding photography!  The exact reasons why, I'll get to later.  Lately I have heard several fellow Military weddingValenzuela-Larson WeddingI love military weddings! photographers tell me that that they love this or that type of photography, but hate shooting weddings, they do it because it pays.  Now here are some wonderfull, talented people that got into photography because they love taking photos.  They became photographer to do what they love for a living, instead they find themselves doing something they don't like just for the money.  How sad is that?!

I love photographing weddings, otherwise I would do something else.  I have heard the stories of difficult brides too, but have enjoyed working with each and every bride I've photographed.  I think the key to keeping our brides happy is simple.  We listen, and we communicate often.

Why are weddings fun? They are a big celebration, family members that haven't seen each other sharing a milestone with the bride.  The hugs, kisses, Wedding DanceAustin and Lia WeddingGroom and Mother tears, and outpouring of love and emotion.  I know I'm getting all mushy here, but I honestly do love being a part of big family weddings.  Let's not even get started on the reception.

I am a storyteller, sure I am covering all the must have shots, but I'm already putting together the wedding album in my head. I'm creating the unique story I find at each wedding.  We want to catch all the special moments, the bride and groom usually don't even know about them until they come back for the viewing.  Capturing the story is so important to us that we use at least two photographers for all but the smallest weddings.  Years from now when the couple pulls out their wedding album to share with their kids and/or grandkids, I want them to feel like they were there, and the couple to re-live that special day again.  Every one of our packages include a photobook or album.

Bonnie and Clyde Themed WeddingBonnie and Clyde WeddingBonnie and Clyde Themed Wedding The challenge.  Weddings are challenging. In a single day I am taking fashion photos, family portraits, landscapes, architectural photography, pets, product photography and you never what else!  I am using specialty lenses, video lights, flash, strobes, gels...seriously I got enough equipment to fill up a truck.  All of this in a single day!

All this being said, you can probably tell I am looking forward to 2017 and being a part of several new chapters and beginnings

It's that time of year again..no not Christmas | Peachtree City Wedding Photographer https://www.gobiphotography.com/blog/2016/12/its-that-time-of-year-again-no-not-christmas-peachtree-city-wedding-photographer Wedding Photography by Gobi PhotographyWedding Photography by Gobi PhotographyWedding Photography by Gobi Photography Sure November through January is full of wonderful holidays.  Thanksgiving (my favorite!), Christmas, New Years, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Festivus etc.  Family and friends gather, eat, drink and enjoy time together.  It's for that very same reason that almost one in three wedding proposals happen during these months.  Of course as wedding photographers, this is certainly not lost on us.  Soon after the holidays, brides start planning their perfect weddings, that's why we attend several bridal shows in January-February.

There are several things a bride should know before hiring a wedding photographer.  Am I now going to subtlety gonna go over the reasons you should pick us?...no.  In fact depending on the bride and the wedding, we may not even be the perfect fit.  Finding a photographer that you gel with, is probably one of the most important factors in selecting a wedding photographer.  More than just about any vendor, perhaps with the exception of your wedding planner (if you have one), you will spend the most time with your wedding photographer.  If they don't a personalities that you can hang out with for hours, then pick someone else.  Even in our small community of Peachtree City, Tyrone and Fayetteville, there are several talented wedding photographers, whose photography I highly respect and admire.  One of best parts of our job is having fun with our clients.  Having a good time, joy and happiness are more important to creating timeless images and capturing memories than any camera or lens.

Don't get hung over what equipment your photographer has.  We use professional camera bodies and lenses, that is what we are comfortable with, and trust.  Ultimately, it is the photography your photographer delivers that is most important, not the equipment they use.  That being said, whatever equipment they use (Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Fuji, Sony...etc.), they must have redundancy.  For goodness sake, it's your wedding, they have to have more than one camera, even better there should be more than one photographer.  We always use a minimum of two photographer, oftentimes more depending on the size and duration of the wedding.

These are not all the factors to consider in regards to wedding photography, I cover more in several more posts to come, after all it is Christmas...I mean Wedding season.
